Apologies for my lack of knowledge but what is the maximum age to start and pay into a private pension to qualify for the Gov 20% contribution? Is it necessary to still be working?

You don’t get tax relief above age 75.There’s no minimum age but you only get tax relief based on your relevant earnings. If you don’t have enough relevant earnings then you can still put in 2880 into a pension and get tax relief to bring it to 3600 per year.2
