Hi, in the New Year i'd really like to trace both my Partner's and my Family Tree.
Unfortunately all the usual Genealogy websites don't seem to cover Northern Ireland as part of the UK.
Does anyone from Norn Irn have any tips for me that don't work out too expensive?
I would really appreciate any help XX Jan:o

How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?

Your could try familysearch.org - its free and run by the Mormon church.Theres a section entitled 'How do I start'. If you live near Belfast, the church also has a family history library at the church on the Holywood Road, opposite Shorts social club. Again its free and the staff will help you with your research. The library is used by lots and lots of people from outside the church.The library has the microfilmed records of Irish births and deaths from 1865 and the marriages from 1845. Once you get a start you can then check out the public records office at Balmoral Avenue, but you need to get some basic groundwork done first before going there or you'll end up wasting a lot of time.
Also if you don't want to buy a commercial genealogy programme, if you go to the download site at familyhistory.org, you can download Personal Ancestral File 5.2.18.0 for free.
Once you start, especially if you have early success, then you'll find it hard to stop.0 -
www.emeraldancestors.com is very good. There's a couple more I use but I'll have to dig them out and post again when I've found them.Member #7 SKI-ers Club

I would love to do this too, based in Scotland. I asked my dad about his grandfather and he didn't know much about his grandparents at all, so makes me more determined to try and find out what I can, for us all.
I did try the Mormon site this morning, using details of people I know, and couldn't find anything related to them at all... myself included....0 -

I believe the online records only apply to people who are dead and who have been for at least 100 years. This is not too much of a problem if you know your parents and grandparents as this can usually get you back beyond this.
For anyone with ancestors from the Shankill/West Belfast area, you can check the 1901 and 1911 census records here

As a previous poster said try this site;
However the names are limited to persons over 18 years of age (in April 1912) with a Pro-Unionist background

Until I have some time on my hands to research my family tree, I keep compiling web sites that I think will be of use to me some day.The ones listed above have now been added - thanks to all who posted them :j .
I'm listing below some of the sites from my list.I have no idea if they'll be of any use to anyone else but I thought i'd list them just in case.
Good luck x

I just tried this for the surname HIGGINS. This only has 222 births and the latest of those is 1875.I used to have a signature with links to the League Tables for good/bad shipping charges for Northern Ireland. But I have since learnt that this is against site rules - so they are no longer here! PM me if you need them0
