Maths English online certificate?

Options
I have someone asking me about courses to do maths and english, They have been told to go on the Alison website, as far as I can see they don't have the GCSE courses. They have been told by the job center or SeetecPlus to go on that website.

Then I'd suggest they do what has been suggested.  GCSE qualifications are not the only maths and English qualifications but could help in showing competency.  Learning on that site could certainly be a refresher for these skills.

If GCSE qualifications are what this other person actually needs then I'd suggest enrolling in adult education classes (which will be starting next month).  These are likely to be at no charge for someone who does not already hold equivalent qualifications.  Time spent on Alison this month could help prepare for the assessment before enrolment too.

I think it's the job centre given out wrong information, to do the job he wants to do he has to have qualifications in GCSE Maths English, he can do the job but he hasn't those certificates so he has been told to go on Alison to get the certificates. I will know more when I see him next week. I agree going on that site will be good as a refresher but it sounded like he was told go on that site to get your qualifications.

If I were he I would check that the employer requires GCSE rather than "GCSE or equivalent level".  The latter could be easier and quicker to achieve as there are other Level 2 qualifications out there.  I haven't looked at Alison for a long time but I would still expect that, to be accepted by an employer, the certificate would need to be achieved at in-person tests.

Thanks I will have to find out what exactly he has been told by the job centre, I'm just helping him sign up as he isn't very good with computers. He has a laptop so at least that's the first step. I will also look at learn direct. He was saying he was in the armed forces and coming out of it he has to take the English and Maths tests even though he has done the job while in the forces.

Which branch of the Armed Forces was he in?  The RAF has (or used to have) RAFET (RAF education tests) in Communications (English) and Calculations (Arithmetic) which are the equivalent of the old CSEs (allegedly....).
Unless he's going for a job that needs Algebra, etc, RAFET may be enough to prove his numeracy and written communication skills.

I believe that the Army and RN have/had similar schemes.

It was the Navy and I believe he was saying he wants a job that uses Algebra but I'm not 100% sure. What he said now he is a civilian the tests he did in the Navy doesn't mean anything in civilian world.

Cheers for the link for the alison website maybe thats what he was told, I will ask him if that sounds familiar.

If not I will show him the gov site, if all fails I could go to the job centre with him and find out what they want him to do.

He needs to find out exactly what the employers requirements are. Level 2 functional tests are accepted by many employers and may be quicker and easier to obtain than GCSEs. They are often what apprentices without GCSE do - most of my apprentices can sail through them in less than 3 months. They are often free courses. We have a couple of local providers who do intensive pass courses for free too and many people can pass in weeks.

That's great, I don't think he will have any problems passing them, I will update this when I find out what he was actually told by the job centre.
