cheap kitchen roll/alternative?

Does anybody know of any cheap kitchen rolls or alternatives I could buy, even in bulk??

I have 3 lovely (but very old) dogs and between them they are blind, deaf, toothless, arthritic and have dementia! I love them to bits but I also seem to spend an awful lot of my time cleaning up accidents and am getting through an awful lot of kitchen roll?

Anybody think of any cheap options??

  • Maybe use the wiper rolls that you see at the doctors surgeries?  If you look online at the medical suppliers, you will find some that are absorbent.  I looked at medical supermarket.com - they had white pull from the centre rolls  for under £20 ex VAT and I would expect other  companies to offer something similar.  The only problem is that you will have to buy 12 rolls at a time.

I have got an old towel and chopped it up into kitchen roll sized pieces. I have a long haired cat and when she gets a poorly tummy she gets poo on her pantaloons. I wet the towel pieces and give her a wipe. I then wash it out and then wash them in the machine. Bit like babies Terry nappy’s. The towel is better than kitchen roll at cleaning up.

Builders merchants have (usually blue) pull-from-the-centre rolls,  around £4 for a roll of 500 sheets. Maybe cheaper if in bulk -  I only needed one!

Not so much for cleaning up but if the dogs have 'favorite places' a washable puppy pad put there might help. We mostly get ours from Amazon . Find they are brilliant at absorbing and dry quickly after a quick machine wash. If it's a poopy accident I wash with Napisan. They have lasted several years before the waterproof backing started to fail.
I think for wiping up it might be better to use old towels or other cloth, chuck them in a bucket and wash with napisan when you have enough. Hope it doesn't seem too yucky ...I used to use cloth nappies on the children (a long time ago) so it just makes sense to me.

Thanks , I might have to look into builders merchants.
I did use washable pads originally but they eventually get a wee smell that doesnt seem to come out (and I got fed up washing them).
Not to mention oldest dog feels that if her front paws are on a pad then so are her bits (hint- they usually arent!!LOL).

  • I have an earthenware pot full of clean, small, cotton rags to use instead of paper towels. There are squares cut from old cotton socks for scrubbing, and squares from old cotton T-shirts, the larger pieces made dish clothes.

The dog gets hosed down on the front drive when she rolls in fox poo in the park, and she is small enough to be bathed outside in a plastic garden trug, with some mild Vosene, and rinsed with several buckets of warm water. She has some old towels kept for her use.

She has wet the carpet a few times recently, and I put an incontinence pad on it to absorb the worst of the urine before washing the area and treating it with a bit of white vinegar.
