How is this possible. Credit card 4 months after discharge??

Options
Hi all

Just a little background.

Automatic discharge in march just gone.

The company I work for was cyber attacked in June, resulting in our personal data being stolen including copies of official documents and identification. In response they have given us two free years of an equifax account so we can monitor for any suspicious activity.

So, that's the background (honest it will all make sense in a minute). I have had a clearscore account for years and I check it monthly to make sure that my old accounts are being updated correctly, as my debts keep being sold onto new recovery companies. Checking it last week, up pops credit card offers. I'm not going to mention any companies etc, as that isn't the point of this post. They all said I was pre-approved.

I thought, that's an excellent way of checking that the equifax account will actually flag any activity. So, knowing there would be no way I would get accepted, but also knowing I would get a hard search on my report, thus triggering an alert, i confirmed the details they had.

Imagine my horror, when I was accepted, with a fairly high credit limit as well. Apparently the card should be with me within the week.

The good news is, it did indeed trigger a notification, so I know at least that part is now working. Now I have to get in contact with them today to cancel the account, assuming this will be easy to do within the 14 day cooling off period.

My question is, how is this possible? 4 months since discharge, and with my BR clearly showing on my credit report, with accounts clearly showing as in default. And to top it all off, with a company that was one of my original creditors??

I'm truly at a loss for words.

Can't offer a reason why do got the card, but is there a reason you won't just keep it as you've been discharged?

I presume the OP has leant the error of their ways with regard to the potential evil of credit cards and the horrible rates of interest they charge you.

Bankruptcy tends to have such an effect.

As to why you have been accepted for credit so soon after discharge, I don`t know, greed? stupidity? an error? who knows.

Yes could be a number of reasons, same as going bankrupt.
Just wanted to make sure the it's not being returned just because the OP thinks it's wrongly issued.

Thanks all for your replies. As JonVarnas said, maybe a glitch. I did double check on my credit file that everything was showing before I applied.

As the all wise sourcrates says, once bitten and all that. I just don't want that temptation hanging around. It's all too easy to quickly put an emergency expense on it, but if it's not there, then there is no temptation.and its a valid point Hill (also one of my favourite cop shows, wish they'd show it on TV again), i did think, any minute now I'll get an email saying there's been a mistake. But nope.

The company have made a commercial decision.

They think they can make money out of you.

I once was turned down for a credit card. On the face of it I had a perfect credit record.

They didn't think they would make money from me and they may have been right.

Don't blame you, it's a show of strength admitting you might be tempted.
