What's your hybrid charging routine?

With very limited battery only range I would imagine keeping it topped up would be the way to go.2

It will no doubt have it's own perimeters for what is considers fully charged and discharged.
For instance, some Toyota Hybrids only utilise 40% of their battery.
The onboard software will consider it fully charged at 80% and discharged at 40%.
They do this to help prolong the battery life.
If you want to maximise the battery use, just charge it up when you need it charged.
It'll have it's own strategy to try and prolong it's own life as best it can.

When I had one (Golf GTE) I always topped it up to 100% to minimise the amount of petrol needed.2

Well if you want to maximise the saving from a PHEV. Then charge every day/night (depending on energy tariff) after using car. Full battery gives the most savings.
This is MSE after all.Life in the slow lane2
