Ticket enforcement

It's cheaper to travel from Manchester Piccadilly to Delamere, than from Altrincham to Delamere, despite the Altrincham journey being shorter! The difference is £6. With an advance single.
If I buy a ticket from Manchester Piccadilly (ie paying for all my journey, and more!), but get on the train at Altrincham, do you think they will enforce the rule? Or do the staff recognise it's a silly rule and ignore it?

Some ticket machines won't work if your ticket isn't for that station.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Do you mean ticket barriers rather than machines? I recently travelled with Avanti from London Euston to Liverpool and was surprised that my ticket was barely looked at. I had to show it at Euston before boarding but wasn't asked for my senior railcard. On the train they announced that there would be a check but it didn't happen. On the way back, no checks or barriers at all.Brie said:Some ticket machines won't work if your ticket isn't for that station.1 -
And can they apply a penalty fare for starting my journey at a later station? Or would it just be the difference between the two ticket prices?0

Very much depends on who you get, but strictly speaking with an Advance Ticket you have to get on at the named station and travel through to the destination without breaking your journey (Condition 6). So you could be told your ticket is not valid.lukekelly19 said:It's cheaper to travel from Manchester Piccadilly to Delamere, than from Altrincham to Delamere, despite the Altrincham journey being shorter!
