  • I just do my mince on the cooker as it doesn't take long. A dash of Lea and Perrins W Sauce and a bit of fresh garlic gives extra flavour.

  • I always add turnip.......if I didnt have any I wouldnt make mince and tatties....its an essential ingredient.... Sweat (think thats the word..)the onions and then do the same with the turnip and then add the mince, and yes the BISTO powder only not granules

  • What's the big thing about Bisto powder? Why is it different to the granules in this case?

All the replies seem to suggest doing it on the stove and not the slow cooker. Do you really think that the stove will be best?

The granules have fat and meat stock added, the powdered is only coloured/seasoned cornflour. I personally find the granules to have an artificial, greasy taste.

I would just do on the burner - only 30 minutes or so. By the time you prep for SC not worth it IMHO.

Hope it works out - give us feedback.

  • no point doin it in the SC, by the time you've done your veggies and browned the mince, covered it with water it will simmer away nicely. The mince is minced small enough to ensure will be soft. The SC ensures cheaper meat cooked very slowly will be soft and tender

Nope its every bit as good in the Slow Cooker.

Mince and Tatties isn't predominantly Scottish

Over here in Sunny Northern Ireland we refer to it as Mince ,carrots and onion.

We either have it as a sort of stew with potatoes through it or more usually with boiled or mashed spuds on the side

Bisto is optional andf granules are just as good

I don't know anyone irrelevant of age who don't love it
How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?
  • Hi All

Lol this is a favourite in our house, we call it 'stovies'. Basically brown off an onion, fry off the mince, add enough made up gravy (bisto) to cover. Peel and quarter potatoes, bung them in the gravy, lid on , cook for 30 minutes - yummy!!!! and it may jsut have solved my problem for tea tomorrow night!
