Hi i live in Sunderland and for many many years while my husband has been working we have had the council tax taken from his wage some months £200 plus and on good months £300 plus it all went through the courts to do it this way.
Now the company he worked for is no longer we have received a bill for £6000 plus saying we HAVENT paid the council tax we have forward proof of what pay slips we had left and  attachment of earnings and things but they are not accepting them as proof.
we are getting people at the door now demanding we pay i just dont no what to do i need help.

So that sounds like arrears of Council Tax being collected through attachment of earnings but have you been paying the ongoing amounts to tbe Council direct.

What is being deducted from wages woukd only relate to amounts due before the attachment.

And if the company is 'no longer' what have you been doing to continue payments?

We need a bit more info on the financial side of things in order to comment on this.

It's usually a reference number mixup when that happens. See if you can find out what reference went with the attachment to earnings.

It's clearly ridiculous for a council to get an aoe, payments to be made, but these not credited at the council.

  • Just to check...probably a silly question...obviously the payments you were having taken direct from your pay were for arrears, but presumably you were paying council tax for the current years, too? Hope that makes sense.

Speak to the council, not the bailiff, see if fatbelly`s theory holds any water re: the reference numbers.

This appears to be farcical, the council must have known an AOE was in place for your debt, I assume, as others have hinted at, that you have been paying your ongoing liability to them as well?

They should not have cut you off with a "never received the money" response, they have a civic duty to look at what has gone wrong here, as something obviously has, or we are not been told the full story?.
