Where was your teenage Saturday job?

I'm watching a C5 programme about the old High Street shops such as Woolworths, C&A, Radio Rentals etc. It got me remembering my teenage Saturday jobs: firstly on a market stall, then a Dolcis concession inside Burtons, and finally in our local McColls where my wage for all day Saturday and Sunday morning went up to £21.96 on my 18th birthday 😊.

I worked in a local newsagents 9-1 every Saturday, I hated every minute of it.
I then helped my brother out by doing his paper round and loved it, out of the house every day by 6.15 and home by 7.30 am.

In the call centre for Great Universal Stores. I was lucky as I applied for the order line but they put me on the new customer line instead which meant my salary was £3.25 an hour. Our union had sold us out so contracted hours were the same rate no matter what day of the week it was whereas other call centres got 1.5x on Saturday and 2x on Sundays if contract or overtime (we only got 1.5x on Sunday for overtime, normal time on Saturday).

Did that for 6 months and then got trained for the enquiries line which moved my pay to £3.90 an hour. No pay rise for becoming 18 but just after that got promoted to a manager on £17k prorated but went off to uni. Would take me another 7 or so years to earn that much again

I worked at the Fortes service station on the M6 at Charnock Richard (only a mile from home). Luckily in the shop rather than the eating areas. 9 till 3 Saturday and Sunday for £5 in 1974.

I remember once being hauled out by the general manager to make sandwiches with her. I was buttering (marge really) for egg sandwiches and was told I'd make the customers fat. When we moved on to ham I was told just to put spread round the edges so there wouldn't be complaints.

When I was 14 I worked in a local bakers all day Saturday for £1, in 1971, I think it went up to £1.25 by the time I left in 1973   I also brought home lots of leftover cakes and bread 🤣. I had started college then and worked in Chelsea Girl for about £5 and 20% discount, I think it had gone up to about £8 when I left in 1975 to start full time work.  The shop got it all back as I couldn’t resist the clothes!

Woolworths mid sixties for an unbelievable 14/11d per day.  Enough to go to the Mecca on Saturday night though with quite a bit left over!
