mother-don't-care!

Options
I really needed to let off some steam regarding mothercare or should i say mother-don't-care!
I purchased a cot for my baby son from them some months age, and a few days before christmas the dropside fell apart! it just literally fell apert in my hands as i lifted the side up (with my son in the cot). I contacted mothercare who said that because it was over 6 months old all they could offer was a replacement side, which would take up to 28 days! i told them that wasn't good enough, the cot was still under guarantee. i don't own a travel cot so where was my son going to sleep?
Again they said that was all they could do. I would have thought that mothercare of all companys would realise the importance of a baby having somewhere safe to sleep.
They just don't seem to care, they have had my money and now don't want to no.
well thanks for nothing mothercare, i will never set foot in one of your stores again!!

  • That's really bad! If it was me i'd contact head office first. If there's no joy there then i'd type a nice letter to TS and send Mothercare a copy. I'm sure it wouldn't look very good on the corporate image if it was known how shoddy the merchandise is made, not very safe for kids is it? It's not like their stuff is cheap either. Good luck
  • it was the head office number i phoned, so i think i will go down the route you have suggested, thankyou.
  • tbh if it was me I would proba bly dismantle and take it to a local store, if you have one, and complain.

Good Luck with getting it sorted

  • hi there

my daughters cotbed did this after 12 months and they still gave me the full value in vouchers (it could not be replaced as it had been discontinued) i did this by going back to the store. Even though it was out of warranty a cot bed should last up to 5 years so they didnt even try and argue.m

    hope this helps
  • yeah I would take it back to a local store..an item has to be fit for its purpose doesnt it so surely a cot should last in the very least 2 years?
  • ooh just had another little thought. If you give head office another ring and hope to speak to someone different. If they say the same then ask them whether they record their calls, if they do you will have more proof of what you are saying. Seen as the other lady got vouchers when hers broke, you may have been talking to someone who hadn't got a clue. If you still get no joy then email TS so you'll get a quicker response.

I had a similar problem with their customer service over an Urban Detour travel system- the front wheel literally fell off and I had to carry the stupid great big 3 wheel buggy and dd up a big hill to get home!! was sooooooo angry, but they just kept fobbing me off. It happened about 3 times in all, and the brake broke too. Needless to say, I will not be using it for dd2, and i will never buy another buggy from there! Their attitude seems to be 'youve bought it now, your problem!'

Hi, Charleypink. I hear what you say, but was the cot put up correctly? a wooden cot does not just break! It is screwed together with the moving side being held with thoose plastic clips. If it realy has smashed and the wood broke or plastic clips. I would march it back to the shop you bought it from with the bill of sale! A full refund is due.
    Good Luck...
If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

could it be temporarily repaired or are some of the brackets actually broken? if it could be temoprarily repaired then I would suggest purchasing a hot glue gun (less than £10). I know you should not have to.

I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!
  • Take it back to the store. They may simply replace it.

If not, then tell them that it is their statutory duty to prove that the cot was "fit for purpose" at the time it was purchased.

Use those exact words. Stick to your guns, but be polite and calm. Just keep telling them that "it's your statutory duty to prove that the cot was fit for purpose, when I bought it".

They can't of course prove this and will simply have to replace it or refund your money.
