oliel said:Hi there my son is 17 and has started an apprenticeship on a rate of £6:40 - Will this go up to £8:60 when he turns 18 or will he have to complete 1 year of apprenticeship first? ThanksGoogling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0

Yes I did that and it says this...so Im thinking he's has to be there a year before he gets the minimum age 18 year old wage of £8.60? And that he will still get paid £6:40 when he turns 18 until he has been there for a year.
Apprentices
Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate if they’re either:
- aged under 19
- aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship
Example
An apprentice aged 21 in the first year of their apprenticeship is entitled to a minimum hourly rate of £6.40.
Apprentices are entitled to the minimum wage for their age if they both:
- are aged 19 or over
- have completed the first year of their apprenticeship

Surely he will not be "aged 19 or over" on his 18th birthday.1

Apprentice pay and the National Minimum Wage
There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you’re in.
Your employment contract should confirm your rate of pay.
Aged 16 to 18
The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £6.40 per hour.
Aged 19 or over and in your first year
The current National Minimum Wage rate for an apprentice is £6.40 per hour.
Aged 19 or over and have completed your first year
You’re entitled to the National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage rate for your age

When he completes his first year but still 18 (ie under 19), he will still receive £6.40.
When he reaches 19 he will also have completed his first year of apprenticeship and so will be due the then current NMW/Living Wage for his age.0
