I want to make a special meal

On new years day, I have never cooked or even bought a turkey and ham and would love to surprise the family.
What size of turkey and ham would i need for 2 adults and 1 child, how long do i cook?
Do i need to cook it the night before?
Any tips and advice very much appreciated.

Have given this some consideration and was wondering whether a joint of lamb might be more welcome on New Years Day after all we've been eating Turkey and Ham for nearly a week now and so have most other people.Buy a leg of lamb and stick it in the oven on a low light about Gas Mark 2 or the equivalent. If you want to eat at 2pm I would have it in the oven by 9am and let it chug away slowly.Roast potatoes can be cooked separately.Remember to take the meat out 20 mins before serving to allow the meat to relax and tenderise. If you cover it with a clean cloth it wont get cold

Cooking both a turkey and a ham will give you an awful lot of meat if there's only two adults and one child - however if you're organised you could freeze some of the ham for sandwiches etc.

I wouldn't do a whole turkey for so few people - get a turkey crown instead. You might be able to get a bargain now saying Christmas is over!

If you're worried about new cooking things, it might be another reason to do only turkey or ham. Cooking times will vary with the weight of the meat you're cooking.

    Good luck!
