Bit of a dilemma work wise
I started a new job 5 months ago as the sales manager and it was in an industry I’ve been in over 20 years, but my previous role I was in it for 2 years but in a different industry as I wanted to try something new.
So the company I left basically a lot of people left or got sacked but I stabilised the sales team and said I wanted to be the sales manager. I was verbally told yes it’s your job but then after a couple months I had to interview for it and then after that was told I wasn’t good enough but told they wanted me to train the new manager as she is from a totally different industry and an operations manager and not sales. I didn’t take it well and not my greatest moment but I threw my toys out the pram. I was the standard out performer on my team, was totally left to do my thing and was promised a promotion at some point once I passed some team leader coarse which I did but then was told no promotion on the horizon for at least 2 years but we want you to train to be an expert on a certain product we want to push but no extra money.
Anyway got offered the managers job at another firm but back to what I know. Doing well, I feel valued and if I ask for something I get it and because my manager can concentrate on her role more and can leave me and not have to babysit she’s breaking her targets. But a sales manager role for the number 1 rival of the company that messed me about came up so out of spite and I wanted to see if they think I was any good so I applied and I got a first stage interview and passed. But I’m now worried I’ll get offered it and not sure what to do if I get it?
Do I stay where I am where I’m treated well and the star player or try something new? New place is no weekend work and more money but it’s a longer journey and pressure.
A question I asked in my interview and the answer I got makes sense now why I didn’t get promoted at my last job. I asked what has frustrated you the most about people that have had this role before. The answer I got was originally my role would have been sales and operations but over the years as a company we realised a person is really good at one side but poor on the other and can’t do both so we have split it. Now my old operations manager wasn’t very good and really struggled, so I think when we got a new branch manager he knew this and couldn’t get rid of him so hired someone with an operations background but put them in sales thinking I’d just accept it but it backfired. Since I left I saw my old line manager a couple weeks ago told me she’s had enough and sales are just awful since I left and she wished they listened to her and offered me more to stay. And turns out now 3 people were hired to replace me and it’s just not working lol.

out of spite
That is never a good reason to apply for a job. You don't want the job, you want to stick it to the people who didn't promote you. So you are willing to pass up (again) on a job you do well that suits you, for spite? Unless you can think of some much better reasons that you want the job, don't do it. You will regret it when the triumph wears off - which it will quickly do.2 -
Given you haven't been offered anything yet there's nothing much to worry about. If they do offer you something you can consider if you will be happy there or better where you are now. If they don't offer you anything you can be grateful as you know what a mess they made previously.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Yeah I know I shouldn’t just go over just to prove a point. My time being there I wanted to learn the products and had an interest in learning something new but I just got nothing from them. Even the person who got the job over me when we bumped into each other she couldn’t understand why they were not invested in me as I was clearly willing to invest in them and she’s been on interviews and can’t wait to leave. When I handed in my notice she really tried to get senior management to commit to me or give me a pay raise but they wouldn’t entertain it, she even said selfishly I want you to stay but for yourself I’d just go as clearly the other company are invested in you.
The interview I had I asked is there anything about me, you have a hesitation on or need me to clarify. The interviewer said no it’s great you’ve got a little experience in this industry plus the 20 plus in the other and it’s good you have now a little bit of management and did the management thing at our rival, we mainly want someone who can manage a team and not necessarily knows the products but out of the 5 we’ve seen you are top of the pile 🤷♂️1
