If my experience is to go by you might have to wait a while to get the refund. I requested a repayment (it used to be automatic until a couple of years ago) just over 4 weeks ago, refund not received yet so I have raised a complaint. We'll see how that goes
Is there actually a refund waiting to be issued or is it still just a credit balance on your account?
Still a credit balance on my account. When I requested the refund I was emailed a confirmation detailing the
request has been successful along with a transaction Id, but nothing has happened since
In that case it could be caught by this and need manual intervention?

Who knows. It would be nice if there was some communication explaining the delay. I'm not holding my breath. I will give it another mth then I will raise it with my mp
It's just my opinion and not advice.

Part of an MP's job is looking after their constituents and holding public bodies accountable for their actions / inaction.  HMRC are currently providing a totally unacceptable level of service.

I agree but what has been posted so far doesn't seem to be at the point most people would consider involving their MP.

If that were the case that public expectatations were met HMRC staff would have nothing to do for 50 weeks of the year.

I did my 23/24 tax return a couple of weeks ago, HMRC owed me quite a bit.
They transferred the amount to my bank the following week (about 4-5 working days).
In the past I have had to wait for an email and then request a payment through their site, but this year it was all done automatically.
I've had to request it the last couple of years, before that it was automatic. Once requested I always received the refund promptly, however not this year, no idea why its different. Strange how it is not consistent.
It's just my opinion and not advice.

Do I conclude that it does not get paid into my SIPP as an additional government contribution then ?

You only ever get the 25% that the pension company adds within your pension.

Any other tax saving is personal to you and is never added to your pension fund.
