Coal bunker

Hi all , we have just moved into a house with a real fire and we need something to put the coal into!
The cheapest I've seen is £70 , which is a bit of a shocker!
Does anyone know of any cheaper bunkers ?.....don't mind if it is plastic or metal.

Do B&Q not do small metal storage cupboards cheaper than that? I'm sure there are some which open on top as well as at the front, although it might be tricky to get the last bit of coal out. (Mind you, whatever system you use it's tricky getting the last bit of coal out!)

Get someone to build you one?

Do you REALLY need a bunker?

We buy coal in bags - quantity discount, from local builders merchant.Don't use the perol station,at their prices. Next cheapest is Homebase on 10% day. But still £.99/bag smokeless (less 29.9p)

You won't know how much you'll be using, anyway, so rather than tying up £$£$ in coal & a storage bunker & garden space, why not wait 'till winter & buy a few bags first?

& depending on the availability of scrap timber - we've only ever bought logs ONCE in 15years - you could burn wood, too!!

I often see these in the local free ad type papers, free for collection as most people are getting rid if them.

My local council is selling plastic composting bins for £5, it would be ideal for a coal bunker. Check to see if your council has a similar offer.
  • ask at the local council. I live in a council house and for the first 15 years did not realise the council would provide a bunker if asked. Alternatively ask your local coal merchant.

Ask your coal merchant, he should be able to help.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
