Depending on the location, and how much daily commute you will accept once away for work, there could be innovative solutions available.
I once considered a role near Clacton which would have meant staying away and the option I explored was a static caravan park for low rate, long term reservation and releasing that during all school holidays.
Other types of locations may have other types of "novel" approaches that might be worth exploring.

I had a job where we took on a large contract over 100 miles away and I had responsibility for setting it up. I was expected to do two days there, but didn't always know when I'd be staying. My employer paid, but always wanted a low cost option.

I used B and Bs initially, would stick with one until I struggled to get a booking, then moved on. I grew to dislike them as time went on. My work was quite emotionally charged and the level of interaction in the evening /  morning was something I came to dislike. People were only trying to be nice, but I found it oppressive.

I then moved to hotels and the anonymity of a hotel suited me better. Prices were higher, and more variable, especially in the tourist season. Using booking deals and offers worked to keep the price down. Check to see if your work offers any of these discounted voucher schemes as an employee benefit.  We then negotiated a corporate deal with a big chain and got a fixed price every night. At busy periods it amounted to 60% or so off.

I have a relative who worked around a 90 minute train journey from home. Travelodge would often be cheaper than train fares and he regularly stayed Mon-Thur when he could. He knew exactly when new rooms went on sale (from memory it was 2am on a Wednesday) and he would log on and book several weeks of rooms at a time. For a long time he was getting the £9 rooms for almost every night.

I'd try different things to see what works for you - but to get cheap deals you will have to work at it. There is a balance to be struck between comfort / suitability and cost.
  • My niece was studying at uni. about 60 miles away from home, but only for 3 days per week.  She stayed living at home with Mum and Dad generally. She/her parents negotiated with one of the big chains who had a hotel in the uni. area for her to travel and study on day 1, overnight stay on night one, study again on day 2 with another overnight stay, then study on day 3 but travel home that night, and stay home the rest of the week.  As she was dong this regularly for many weeks over the year, they got a great deal for regular 2-night stays each week, AND gave her a lockable store cupboard to stash her stuff in when not there, so she had minimum bag-carrying. Gave her really cheap accom. and minimal train fares, and the cost-cutting living at home with parents. Got to be worth asking about.

There are many things to consider. How are you commuting? I travel to London for work. It's a personal expense. I have work 2 days a week so stay 1 night.

I use a coach (not train) or drive.

I travel on the day of work. I'm in office by 9.30am and it's okay with my line manager.

I stay overnight in a hostel.

I carry some food from home.

I buy dinner, breakfast and lunch.

I keep some snacks with me for emergencies.

    Hope this helps.

Try Airbnb or vrbo as well

    Many thanks,
