PRIVATE PENSION CONTRIBUTIONS

in Cutting tax
Not sure if this is the right place to put it. My husband is in the higher tax bracket and works full time. We have joint rental property income, my half is taxable at lower rate and his the higher. I have a private pension but have not paid into it for sometime. I want to restart payments. We want to use a percentage of the joint rental income to pay into it. Can he do this well?

Rental income doesn't count as relevant income for Tax relief in Pensions.
Do you have any other income ? If not then your limited to £2880 p.a into a pension (£3600 once basic tax relief claimed by the pension).
Your husband may have enough headroom in his salary to increase his pension contributions using the rental income to provide the contributions. The tax relief will come from his salary, doesn't matter that the contribution is from rental income. Even if you do have income, this may be the better option if your Husband is getting higher rate tax relief on his contributions to pension1 -
Your husband cannot pay into your pension direct from his salary.
He can use his some of his income after tax to put money into your pension0 -
