Capital Gains Tax Conundrum

in Cutting tax
Would appreciate guidance on the following Capital Gains Tax issue...
In the 2024-25 tax year, I want to begin selling some shares I own and don't wish to pay CGT so I need to work out the number of shares I can sell whilst keeping below the £3k profit trigger for CGT.
Trouble is, I don't know my "tax base cost allocation" (I think that's the correct phrase). The situation is complicated. It's been over 20 years since I originally purchased the shares through two company share offer schemes and the original company has merged, and later demerged/split, during this time. Whilst I probably have all the original documents, trying to work out my "tax base cost allocation" is a nightmare so I've come up with an alternative plan - but is it a cunning plan and will it be accepted by HMRC?
Question: Could I sell just £3k worth of shares in a tax year? That way I can't possibly make more than a £3k gain. Whilst it will take a handful of years to sell all the shares I hold (assuming Labour don't reduce CGT threshold any further), I'm OK with that.
Thanks for reading.
