Frequency of State Pension

  • I decided to have mine paid weekly, as the four-weekly option really annoyed me (and would mess up my spreadsheet which has income and expenses on a monthly basis). Taking it weekly has the benefit of getting your first payment sooner when you first take your state pension. I wouldn't have done this had there been a real monthly option for the state pension, bringing it in line with my work pension which is paid monthly, on the last working day of the month, just like my salary used to be paid.
  • This comes across as a total non-issue to me. I am just grateful that I have lived long enough to receive my state pension, which is a welcome addition to my pension income.

Do people really expect a national state pension system, that pays out to millions of people, to take account of all of their own individual payment preferences?

The choices of weekly or 4 weekly payments on a day based on your NI number are both sufficient and efficient.

I also find it hard to believe that people have to take advice about whether to go weekly or 4 weekly!

One downside of the internet and discussion forums is that people seem to be incapable of making their own decisions without 'checking them out' first with strangers!
  • Well it's been helpful for me - although I'm a while off my state pension I assumed I'd get it paid monthly (as opposed to every four weeks)

I'm one of those that would prefer it weekly than every four weeks.

Granted it makes little difference either way but weekly is slightly more convenient for me so this is one of those things that is "handy to know"

But not everybody is aware that there is a choice........

The Government hides this option when people apply, as the application form simply says: “State pension is usually paid every four weeks.”

Do people really expect a national state pension system, that pays out to millions of people, to take account of all of their own individual payment preferences?

Probably not but if there is a choice people should be made aware so they are free to make that choice.

Had you considered that a person might find it helpful to have other people's views? Or that some people might actually need help to make a decision?

  • 'Had you considered that a person might find it helpful to have other people's views? Or that some people might actually need help to make a decision?'

Ok. but my concern is that some people, after taking the views and advice of others, like to hold others responsible for their decisions rather than taking full responsibility themselves.

Such pople would probably find some one else to blame anyway even if they did not receive other people's views.
