The Philips DVP-5960 is a DivX/Xvid DVD Player. The DVP-5960 uses Mediatek 1389DE chips to handle video processing and also uses a Mediatek 1392 chip to handle some of its additional features. It supports HDMI upscaling and has a USB port. On this page I'm concerned with compatible USB Hard Drives, USB/Flash Drives/Keys and Firmware Mods. Anyone interested in the differences between the 5960 and the 5140 (similar, but no HDMI upscaling or USB port) can refer to this page. It's a very good comparison of these 2 players.

The DVP-5140 vs. the DVP-5960

dvp5960_front_c.jpg Yet another new 'DivX Ultra'-certified unit from Philips is the DVP-5960. When I was shopping for a replacement for the DVP-642, the DVP-5960 was about $20-$25 more than the DVP-5140.

    Sorry now out of stock.

    All region
This is a great unit but you must be prepared to do a little work if you want it to opperate to its full potential. As a previous reviewer pointed out, you must visit Philips web site to download a driver to assist you in previewing Jpegs at a quicker rate etc. When the driver is downloaded it must be un-zipped, so you may have to download an additional piece of software. This does not make the player multi-regional, to do that you must:

    1. Turn on the unit
    2. Open the loading tray
    3. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
    4. Navigate to the "Preferences" page using the right arrow key
    5. Enter 138931
    6. You will now see the current region code displayed
    7. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to select the region required or "0" for all regions
    8. Press the "Setup" button on the remote
    9. Press "OK" on the remote
This may seem like alot of hassle, but it is well worth it. We have the player linked to a flat screen 32 inch Sony and you could see the difference straight away. Don't know what it will be like rigged up to a LCD, but I imagine spectacular. Viewing Jpegs is easy, the player will display all the folders on the disc you load and you just select the one you want to view (it then plays them as a slide show). For £40 this is a steal and as usual great service from Amazon.
  • I bought one of these about a year ago in Sainsbugs for a similar price when they were selling 'em off. Great machine, plays absolutely anything you can throw at it. Someone else pointed out it was too slow to play DivX off USB sticks, but I have had no problem with decent brand ones. It's great fun too with the upscaling through HDMI.

The only gripe I have had with it is that it's slllloooooowwwwwww. Very Slow. The remote is as good as useless - unless you are sat right in front of it and it's in a good mood, it doesn't work very well. Also, annoyingly, you have to turn the unit on and wait for it to start up properly before you can eject the disk tray (unlike Pioneers where you can press eject with the power off, it fires up and ejects the tray). I'm not the only person to have these problems. I have got the latest firmware too.
The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.
