Using freedom pass beyond zone 6

Sometimes I do a journey beyond zone 6. The ticket office can issue a ticket from boundary zone 6 but often is not open. Neither the machine nor the online system can cope with boundary zone 6 so I worked out the last station in zone 6 and have been buying a ticket from that station to my destination.
recently a friend said this doesn’t really work as some ‘fast’ trains don’t stop at that station. She said I’m only entitled to use a ‘slow’ train - one that stops at every station on the route. Is she right?

No that's not correct. I have the 60+ card and my local station ticket machine does give the option to buy from zone 6 but stations outside the Oyster zones don't have this option and I sometimes have to check which border station to use. There is no need for the train to stop there. I think that rule only applies to split tickets.1

Some self-service machines do sell 'boundary zone' tickets but others don't. It's variable, depending on the train operator and the make/model of machine involved.
There is also now at least one online vendor for 'boundary zone' tickets - Trainsplit lets you tell it which ticket(s) you already have (eg Freedom Pass, Travelcard etc) and it will take that into account when offering you tickets for the rest of your journey.Official MSE Forum Team member. Please report all problem posts to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com1
