Council Tax Band Lowered

Options
Hello,
I have just received a new Council Tax demand for 2024/25 from City of Westminster with my property placed in band D. At the beginning of the new tax year it was in band E.

I have not challenged my banding. I am going through a lease extension and can only assume this is the reason.

I inherited the property from my mother in 2012, but it has been the family home since before 1991.

My questions are:
  • Am I able to now claim a rebate for previous years charges?
  • How far back can I go? Would 2012 be the limit of any potential claim?
  • How do I go about doing it?
Many Thanks In Advance.

Lease extension process will not trigger a CT band reduction.

Check your band on the government website. There should be an effective date for the new band, the council should automatically refund any overpayment based on that effective date, but they may restrict any refund to 6 years.citing they no longer keep CT payment records for longer.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
