I have an irresponsible lending claim which the financial ombudsman has agreed to investigate. In order for them to do so they are requesting bank statements from 2006 to 2008.
They are also requesting a copy of my credit report from the same period.

Can the bank (HSBC- who I’m no longer with) refuse to provide due to the fact I’m no longer a customer with them? Or the age?

how on earth am I meant to get a credit report  that old

is all lost?

It's unlikely that will have statements older than 6 years regardless whether you are a current customer or not. This is why I always download my bank statements locally.

If the data is no longer available then they cannot assist you.

As a non customer they would be entitled to charge you a fee for providing the service if the data is accessible. Though wouldn't be duplicate bank statements. Just transactional listings that wouldn't provide the same level of detail.

You can submit a Subject Access  Request (SAR) and get all the information they hold on you free of charge. With a different bank I got statements going back to the early 90s.

If they do not have it they will be unable to provide it though.
  • I believe some banks have old records on microfiche.
I do not know if HSBC are one of them.

If they do it will be a big job for someone to look up this information. They may ask you for a fee (plus VAT) to do this - are you prepared to pay?
