What can I do?

Options
I receive universal credit and I've just started a new job. I've just found out that the pay date changes each month meaning that quite often I'll have 2 months pay in one assessment period. So for the rest of this year it'll only be October this wouldnt happen. I don't want to leave my new job but how can I fix this please? I don't think either will change the dates.

I can't cancel and reclaim because I'd have to not claim for 6 months to be eligible for a new date. And I can't live with the stress of my finances being turned upside down. Is leaving this job the only option?

Is this because the 2nd job pays every 4 weeks rather than monthly?

I think this kind of thing can be catered for, but you'd need to UC about how.

  • No it's monthly but the 3rd last working day. My assessment period is 28th-29th. And the paydates range from 26th-29th. So it'll be two months no UC payment then one month UC and repeat like that. I don't think they'd sort it out every time. I'm currently on a mandatory reconsideration for the same thing from May and I think it will end up going to tribunal. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do that every time this happens?

Check with your payroll team - although they pay you on the 3rd last working day, the actual processing date that they send to HMRC on the FPS (that they have to send on or before the day you get paid) may actually be the last calendar date of the month.

Should you end up with 2 payments in one assessment period you can ask UC to re-assign the second payment to your next assessment period.  This is only permitted for monthly paid employees (not 4-weekly paid).  The last time I had to deal with someone on UC, they simply needed to make the request through their UC Journal and it was sorted for them.
