Counselling in the UK is not a legally regulated profession. I have no idea if that is also the case in Australia?

If so, you need to be sure that any qualification / diploma is recognised by a significant number of potential employers. Also in the UK there are two major but competing "professional bodies" and a whole number of smaller ones that "accredit" counsellors but none has any statutory powers.

It is perfectly lawful to work without any formal qualification, if you can find clients or organisations willing to employ you.

It is all a bit of a minefield!
