Debt advice needed please!

Hi all,

Appreciate there are hundreds of these threads kicking about but didn’t want to hijack.

My wife and I are both in debt, collectively and individually, and after many months spent worrying and working things out, we decided, after reading this forum, to do what many others have and stop paying with the eventual aim of defaulting so as to then pay back at a more affordable rate.

We are on track with an emergency fund (for what it’s worth, we split everything equally, always have done regardless of who earns what, including debt), and so far have been ignoring calls, letters etc. All going fine until my wife received a letter from Resolve Call on behalf of Lendable, stating a home visit would be taking place if no contact was made.
Clearly, neither of us wants this to happen but it is causing her to worry, so what steps should she/we take? I was under the impression that we should ignore all contact until defaulted, but if this is not the case I’m happy to get in touch with creditors.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thank you.

  • Don't worry about Resolvecall, they are only door knockers, just don't answer the door to them, if you do by mistake tell them you are not going to deal with them and they should go away, they are not bailiffs so just don't worry.

Whatever you do don't contact them in any way.

You know you are doing the right thing, just stand firm and don't be put off by these people.

I do hope you are ignoring phone calls, E Mails and texts, but open any letters you receive in the post in case there is a letter before action.

If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

Thank you, yes we are ignoring all calls/emails/voicemails but have opened letters, as (I believe) we need to keep an eye out for a Letter Before Action.

Thank you for taking time to read and reply.

Good advice already given above there - keep on doing what you are, and hold firm against any phone calls or (less likely) door knocks. If you have any children living with you it would be a good idea to ensure that they are aware of the importance of not opening the door to anyone. Also be cautious about leaving any accessible rear doors etc open/unlocked.

You probably already know, but if you want a bit more input on budgeting to ensure that there are no savings you have missed, then you can post a Statement of Affairs (SOA) and we can take a look and see if we can spot any more cuts you might think about making in order to speed up the EF building. (And in the longer term, increase the amount you would be able to pay to debt)

My advice would be to get a video doorbell, do not answer the door to anyone and make sure the chain is always on and the back gate locked.

I have had them all, right up to the HCEO's, I simply did not engage with them, any of them.

Debt companies look for easy targets, nice people like you and your wife who both worry.

I do not answer the door unless I am expecting a delivery, I have the video doorbell so I can see who it is and I just leave them muted, they go away and as they are mostly on commission only will stop wasting their time on people who never engage with them.

I would change your contact details, so a new £2 sim from lebara and a new email online, you use these numbers and messages until the debts are nearly three months unpaid, then you say you are suffering from stress and in accordance with GDPR are requesting they only contact you by snail mail.  Then after that you can ask they remove your email and phone number.  Get into the habit of only answering numbers in your contact list and block the numbers of your creditors.  Do not answer calls from Number Withheld.  Let all unidentified calls go to voicemail, if it is anyone important they will leave a message.

If you make a mistake and answer the phone, when they ask for WDC you can say "whose calling for him" and then say "sorry he is not on this number anymore", or "I get a lot a calls for him, I think he used to have this number" or you can just hang up.

Pretty soon it becomes 2nd nature.  The ring doorbell often just makes unsolicited callers do a u turn.
  • You don't need to do anything to stop Resolvecall, if you don't answer the door they will just put a card through the door asking you to contact them which you just ignore. They will not make any attempt to enter your house they are only paid to knock on doors and if you answer they will try and make you pay but if you don't answer they will go away.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

You state"  letter from Resolve Call on behalf of Lendable, stating a home visit would be taking place if no contact was made.."
Has your account with Lenable defaulted?

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read and reply, I really do appreciate it.

As far as I can tell, the Lendable hasn’t defaulted (none have yet) - this is in my wife’s name and we’ve both looked through correspondence and cannot see anything to suggest it has. We’ve checked ClearScore also.

I will upload a photo of the letter as this may clear up some things.

The disposable SIM card sounds like a good idea so we will look into that, and creating dump email addresses is easy to do.

You do nothing. The creditor is just following the normal procedure that they are obliged to before defaulting the account. You should be able to see the default applied on your credit file soon. They might also pass the debt to a debt collector or sell it after default. You can then deal with whoever takes on the debt and arrange repayment if that’s what you intend to do
