Can i claim current years tax back when I go on a career break?

Hi, i am going on a one year career break next month. I will still be employed by my employer but will receive no salary or pay. Can i claim back the tax i have paid so far this year? Thanks

    I'm not sure you can if you are remaining on their payroll - you may have to wait until after the end of the tax year for a refund. 

    (If you had terminated your employment and were not intending to work again, then I think a P50 would be the correct form to fill in). Claim back Income Tax when you've stopped working (P50) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

    If you are still on the payroll then your employer should be reimbursing you some tax each month to take account of the cumulative tax free pay.

    You can notify HMRC of your expected earning for the current tax year, on their website.  It might not make a difference yet but next tax year your tax code will be updated to account for the extra tax you've paid this tax year

    Income tax doesn’t work like that.

    Either your employer will operate payroll each month and refund any tax overpaid on a monthly basis 
    or
    if that doesn’t happen HMRC will refund it when your pay and tax for the year are reconciled , after the end of the tax year. 
    That may not happen until the summer or autumn after the year end.
