Charitable donations

Options
Hi MSE Forumites,

I'm a higher rate taxpayer, and donate regularly to various charities. I believe I am eligible to claim back marginal tax on these donations, but the HMRC website says as someone paid by PAYE that I need to call them to inform them of my charitable donations. Does anyone know if this is this correct? I have been searching in vain for an online form similar to the one for employment expenses, however such a thing does not seem to exist.

Thanks in advance for any info,

Donald

Well - HMRC need to be informed and so calling them or writing to them appears the only options.

There isn’t a form. Try phoning 8am sharp.

I'm not aware of any such form although there might be somewhere within your Personal Tax Account to report the details for specific tax years.

You can only go back (if relevant) to the 2020-21 tax year now and it's key that you make it clear what the net and gross contributions were.

The bet and gross will always be 80/100 equivalent, no other ratio would be correct for Gift Aid donations i.e. your net donation of £100 could only ever be a gross amount of £125.
