You are not silly. We all find ourselves having to learn new stuff at times. Not knowing isn't silly. It's solved by finding out and the solutions aren't always what you might expect.

You do need to think through stuff, particularly circumstances change again and you end up returning permanently to the UK within the next 5 years or after that.

And not just on the debt front. You'd need to return with a good emergency fund, as habitual residence tests could require you support yourself for three months before accessing any benefits, including health care and living costs. If you partner does not have nationality, they could lose the right to live in the UK even if they currently have ILR.

So try and stash an emergency fund and maybe give a trusted relative power of attorney to manage that? At least check it out.

Understandably these circumstances are new to you, but you have to play the hand you are dealt, and you won`t be able to realistically service these debts on your new wage.

Trying to balance arranging payment agreements with debt collectors from 2000 miles away, actually making the payments, etc, then you find your debts have been sold, someone else will be writing to your old address, they won`t be aware you have moved abroad possibly, you may find yourself having this happen numerous times, things will just get so complex and frustrating its simply not worth the hassle.

You will be carrying this burden abroad with you, and I`m certain you can do without such stress.

Its far better they do not know where you are, the whole thing will just fizzle out eventually.

After 6 years all trace will be automatically wiped.
