Same days, less hours - Holiday entitlement


Hi, I have a question regarding my holiday and wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation.
Basically, full-timers work a 9 day fortnight with every other Friday off, from 8:30 to 5pm with 45 minutes for lunch. I work the same days (also a 9 day fortnight) but start at 9:30 each day.
Should I be entitled to same amount of days holiday as full timers as I work the same amount of days as full-timers? They have 7.75 hour days, I have 6.75 hour days (and only get paid for that), so surely when I take holiday I would only be taking 6.75 hours off?
They get 25 days and I’ve been told I get 22 (plus BHs), so I have to come into the office 3 more days than everyone else because I have a shorter day, which doesn’t seem right to me.
I have searched holiday calculators online but they only seem to account for working less days, not same days but less hours.
Hope that makes sense! Would be great if anyone has any input/advice

If you are doing the same job as them and the only difference is the length of the days then you should get the same number of days holiday in my opinion.
What I think is happening is someone is taking the total number of hours your colleagues work and the total hours you work and stating those in days holiday. So yes you would get 22 days (perhaps, haven't done the calcs) if your days were 7.75 hours.

If you convert the 25 and 22 to hours does it work out right? So if a FT day is 7.75 you should get 7.75 x 22 and when you take your leave should knock 6.75 off for each day."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

Whilst people talk about annual leave in days, it's usually tracked in hours. Standard days at my company are 7.4 hours...so if they say you get 25 days holiday, it typically means 7.4*25 hours.Someone working part time, say mornings only, would get their 25 days pro-rated. So say 12.5 days. But the part-time colleague is not being unfairly treated because this 12.5 day number is based on 7.4 hour days.1

FT staff get 193.75 hours, you should get 168.75 hours but 22 of your days equals 170.5. Clarify with HR that you can convert 22 days to hours and take 6.75 off for every day leave you have. The 3 days difference comes in to it when you consider the FT staff hours vs the PT staff hours. My rough calcs showed about a 25 hour difference for the full year. Divide 25 by 7.75 and you get approximately 3 days.
So someone in HR is thinking this means 3 days less holiday when in fact they are wrong as the holidays taken by the PTer are 6.75 and not 7.75.

Same thing happened at my old work place where if I worked the same hours over 5 days rather than 3, I would get 13 days a year. When I explained I can't be given 13 days they just didn't get it at all, saying that I couldn't have the same amount as a full timer because I worked half the hours.. then proceeded to tell me that the gov.uk holiday calculator only applied to large businesses.
In the end I left because they were absolute idiots and I couldn't be bothered with it.
If you work 5 days, you should get the same as a full timer just paid at normal working day for you.1 -
Ask whoever calculates the holiday entitlement to provide step-by-step how they have worked out your entitlement compared with the full-timers.
When you have that you can challenge their method and get the correct amount agreed.0 -
what are your hours per as a proportion of the hours per week the full timers work ?
the numbero f hours of leave you get will be that same proportion as the hours of leave that a full timer gets who is (this may be a theoretical person) on the same version of the contract , has the same service/ seniority as you ( but also bearing in mind for some purposes service may rely on your proportion of FTE- but thati s generally pensions rather than long service leave days and rewards )0 -

That's correct. As a part timer your entitlment is calculated in hours. With a shorter working day you'll receive correspondingly more days off.0
