Terrible mess - benefit payment gone to wrong bank account.

Son is in a bit of a mess. Been awarded ADP and money was supposed to be in the bank today - but isn't. Now he thinks "maybe" he gave them his old bank details - can't be sure as has no copy of the form he filled in and it was 10 months ago. So a biggish back payment has probably gone to his old bank account. He left CC payments and overdraft charges, stopped using that account and now has a new one.
So my question now is, will the old bank smile happily and hang onto the money? A friend thinks if it's benefits then they can't. Virgin Bank.

Depends if the old account is still open or not, easy way to confirm, get on the phone to the old bank and ask them.

Scottish version of PIP sourcrates. Son on phone all day so far trying to get the bank or social security scotland but usual "high vol of calls" etc. Am really worried for his mental health as he's jsut getting over a breakdown, and with new privacy laws etc I can't do anything from here, 50 miles away. I dare say if he hangs on the phone for the rest of the day then somebody will answer at some point. Thanks for prompt help. Would you know at all if they can keep the money - or since its benefits do they have to give him some back?

And yes the old account will still be valid, as I bet he wouldn't have closed it.

If the old account is valid, he should just be able to transfer the money to the new account. It might be even easier for him to setup a satnding order to just pay the money on a regular basis to his new account. It could give him a way to save money, as he might transfer slightly less than he is being paid, so he will start to build up a useful savings pot in his old account.

Update - mistake on the part of social security and they will fix it.3

Possibly bad timing in that there's been a payment batch failure somewhere in the process, for benefits today.
Article here suggests child benefit specifically, but might be the same issue?
