I started as a sales manager at a new company 3 months ago. It was a role I wanted and 3 months into my 6 months probation I had a meeting with my regional manager and he said all good things and to keep it up plus my direct line manager is really happy with me and has been good all round.
Now the local branch 5 min walk from home the sales manager job has become available and I’m wondering if I should enquire or not? Where I am now it’s 20 miles away and the team have been good to me but as my wife said the last few years I’ve learned the hard way that there is no loyalty in business.

I know if I did switch where I am wouldn’t be happy but if I’m honest something like this was the end goal but the position has come early. The sales managers have a big meeting on wed and I’m wondering should I ask about it or just let it go?

Presumably this is local branch of the same company?
I've done the "5 minute walk from the office" before and wouldn't want to live so close to work again. The Mrs at the time used to instruct me to stop off at the pub on the way back otherwise I came home in work mode still and on the 3-4 times a year someone needed to pop in for an hour or two at a weekend all eyes immediately fell on me as most others had a 1-2hr commute.
As you say, your current branch aren't going to like it but its understandable for someone to want to reduce their commute and from a more senior management view point at least you are staying within the business1 -
Yes it’s the same firm
My last company really messed me about over promotions so I left for a more senior position and the new company have been really good to me so far. I was hoping to maybe transfer in a years time but from day 1 I’ve heard they wanted to get rid of the current person. I was hoping they would have stayed a bit longer. I’d be saving about £250 on travel but just don’t want to upset anyone or look disloyal and if I’m honest if my current team would come with me that would be great but then they are all local to where I am currently and would never move0 -
You aren't leaving the company you are going for a job that is more suited to you within the same business.
Just go for it.1 -
What have you got to lose by asking? Make it clear you're not eyeing up the external job market, but as this vacancy has caught your eye, and you so enjoy working for xyz sales ltd etc etc etc.
They may already have an internal candidate lined up, they may want someone with more experience but you'll never know if you don't ask.Signature removed for peace of mind1
