Why cant supermarket job adverts have more detail?

It is quite possible that the Supermarkets don't provide more precise information about working hours as they want people that are hungry to work for them and maximum flxibility.
I understand that Supermarkets receive a lot of applicants and, for many roles, the hurdle to meet the criteria can be rather towards the lower end of the skills spectrum.
I only applied to work in a Supermarket once, but it was not that long ago. The application for general roles was to leave your details in a book. After a while I received a phone call which lasted around five minutes before the caller said they'd give me a trial and offered me the first working shift that coming Friday night start at 10 pm plus Saturday night start at 10 pm. They were not hours that I could make work, so the guy simply said that he'd cross my name out of the book.
A very efficient and effective way of finding out who really wanted to work for them or not.
I can also see it works well for staff that have been there longer then see they get the first choice of the more sociable shifts with new starters working the worst shifts.1 -
It;s a long time since I applied for an ASDA job, but back then you had to state your interest in different departments - it wasn't a firm thing and you'd either be not selected or asked to do something else if one area was oversubscribed, which could be a bit annoying but makes business sense. Why have more employees that you actually need just because they won't move about?
I ultimately never worked in retail but I get the impression from fa,ily members that have that moving about is a routine thing, and the more experienced you are the more you might dart about0
