My wife increased her self employed hours in July 2023 and we started claiming the 30 hours free child care. We actually only use 18 hours so are in effect claiming for 3 hours a week above the 15.

HMRC have canceled our account based on previous years tax returns not meeting the threshold. They keep asking for a 2023/24 projection which again will likely fall under the threshold.

We aren’t claiming for the full tax year. I can’t get HMRC to understand that the claims and increase in hours and therefore profit don’t align to the tax year.

My wife will earn above the threshold for all the periods claimed but this does not align with a tax year. I can’t get them to understand that every job doesn’t start on the 6th of April anyone got any advice on how to resolve this?

Yes and no. This saga started before the 23/2024 tax year had ended and although she has her accounts the submission isn’t due till Jan 2025. So we can now calculate the actual net profit for 23/24 from her accounts which will fall slightly below the threshold for the year.

You’re eligible if you’re 21 or over and do not have a regular income but earn £9,518 a year. This is the same as earning £2,379 every 3 months on average.”

She meets the £2,379 for the periods we are claiming but not the £9,518 for the tax year as her increase in hours didn’t start on April 6th 2023 they started in July.

Every time I do the required 3 month resubmissions they cancel it based on previous tax years and I then have to spend hours on the phone trying to get them to reinstate it. But they just don’t seem to get that the claim doesn’t run to the same year as the tax year. It’s just been canceled again and I am wondering if I am not explaining it correctly to them?
