Sold Car - V5 hasn't Transfered to new owner
I sold a pickup 4 weeks ago and posted off the V5 to the
DVLA with the new keepers details.
As I live (very) rural Scotland I just had the car at the end of the road with a for
sale sign on it, and somebody popped in one day to ask about it, and
subsequently bought it – cash there and then, take it away just now.
The vehicle was being sold as spares or repair as it wouldn’t pass an MOT without work, although too good to scrap. I was still in occasional use but it was a £300 vehicle and being used effectively as a farm vehicle.
The buyer filled out a paper copy with the new keepers
details as I have no internet or phone signal at my yard, and it was just
easier to stick it in an envelope and post it off. Never sent it recorded as
the Post Office is 40-50 minutes’ drive away and not open when I’m not working.
I’m now getting reminders saying the vehicle is uninsured and not SORN’d (I
never SORN’d it to allow the guy to get home – only to realise I couldn’t SORN
it as I had posted the relevant details away – my mistake). However in contacting
the DVLA they are saying I still own this vehicle (so assume the V5 hasn’t
arrived).
Problem is I have very little idea who I sold this too. His name was Peter, he
was (presumably) Eastern European and had a Glasgow postcode, but it was 4
weeks ago.. He hasn’t been back in touch. His intention was to break the pickup
for parts (I got the impression that this may have been his job/business.
In all seriousness if anyone knows a Peter who is (possibly) eastern European, living in Glasgow and bought a 51 Plate Mitsubishi L200 for breaking……
Any advice?

Unfortunately it is your responsibility to transfer the vehicle to the new keeper. Not keeping a copy / record of doing so has left you open to penalties from DVLA. No easy way out I am afraid. All you can do is write to DVLA with all the details you know and hope. DVLA are stating mail is being processed within normal timescales but at 4 weeks there is a slight possibility it could still be awaiting processing - that said my paper driving licence renewal was received back 2 weeks to the day of posting with Easter in the middle.
