Job history deleted

Options
Need references from HR of old jobs that I worked there, but their helpdesk say data protection rules mean they deleted all the records. I have tax and hmrc papers but new job needs references from HR. I'd be grateful for any help on what I can do. Do businesses really delete all traces of old employees after a few years?

I am sure at least some do.

Except for a few regulated occupations you cannot force a former employer (or anybody else) to provide a reference. If your former employer is unable (or unwilling) all you can do is explain the situation to the prospective employer and see what alternatives are acceptable.

Occasionally this can be an impasse.

Most employers hold ex employee records for up to 6 years as it benefits them but it's not compulsory.

How far back are you trying to go

How far back are you going? Most companies will follow GDPR guidelines and delete records 6-7 years after you leave. I doubt anyone would be interested in getting a reference from someone who hasn't known you for 6-7 years as they'd potentially be discussing a very different person to who you are today in a very different stage of career etc.

Even being in Financial Services where vetting is fairly heavy they only go back 5 years (but it does have to be a reference from every employer in that time horizon not just a selection)

Unusual for you to have to provide the actual reference documents. Normally you provide the contact details (HR) for previous employers and the future employer requests whatever they want and the previous employer decides on what they will provide.

Even if the previous employer has the history, then do not have to provide any detail. Many will just confirm you worked for them from one date to another.
