    The final relevant year for SP purposes is the one before the tax year in which you reach state pension age.  Compulsory NI is payable up to the date you reach state pension age.  There is no point, and HMRC will not allow it, in paying voluntary NI for the tax year in which you reach state pension age.

    Only full financial years count.  But if you are still working, then you will have to pay NI up to SPA.

    Remember that NI doesn't just pay for the State pension - it helps fund the NHS and State benefits.

    I couldn't find this information anywhere online, my birthday is in May so little impact. 

    But someone with a birthday on 1st April, and paid at the end of the month. Would pay 12 months of NI ( Apr-March ) but will still not get a year credit, and possibly get a smaller state pension.
