Where does it say that the money cannot be traced? The OP states that his wife is 'struggling to recoup' the money but that is most likely because SJP is waiting for the recipient bank to bounce the money back.xylophone said:
The sole account had long been closed and SJP now maintain that the money cannot be traced?
SJP leave a lot to be desired but they are not mind-readers. If they had been informed that the original account was defunct and had been replaced then they would be culpable but it does not appear that this is the case.0 -
Thank you all for your advice.
In fact what you suggested, the money being sent to the old bank account and then being sent automatically to the new bank account (by the old bank) is exactly what has happened. Thanks, Co-op Bank.
SJP too quite a time to work this out and, in the meantime, my wife was having fits.
All sorted out now, thankfully, and I am grateful and surprised at all the suggestions here from several people.
Clearly, this is the place to go for financial advice.

Glad it worked out. This shows the importance of using the current account switching service so that any payments sent to the old account in error get redirected automatically.
