@MFCRS my life the last 3 and half years after divorce after a long marriage, major surgery and a succession of awful events left me with nothing to my name despite having worked hard all my life !
All I can do is focus on my future, I will get there and I am, I have come a very long way in the last 12 months.
I do have a pot for what I can discretionary spends. Life is what you make it, living on a very low income now is really hard but I am doing ok, all the little moneysavers are helping for the bigger things for me my focus is to get into a place which has some outside space.6 -

I appreciate what you’ve been through @[Deleted User]. I spent the 1990’s married to someone who would happily spend all my salary as well as his own, while still expecting me to cover all the bills and household expenditure, usually while my finances were bouncing along the bottom of my overdraft. (<sarcasm> No, of course he didn’t contribute. His money was for him, not for us. </sarcasm>) On the positive side, the survival skills I learned then are what has made my life comfortable now.
Incidentally, congratulations are in order. Your thread made it into this week’s MSE Newsletter! Well done!

As far as using hankies instead of tissues, you do have to wash and iron them, have to carry possibly a few with you if you have a bit of a cold, so they create quite a bulk especially if you don't carry a handbag, too messy for my taste. At home I just use sheets of kitchen towel or a roll of toilet paper at night, which I keep by my bed if I have a bad cold! Saving money is great but if you have worked all your life you should not go too crazy! We deserve a bit of comfort, not only the super-rich.I don't iron anything anymore, in fact don't have an iron or ironing board. The hankies I use are smaller than average and only used for when I have a cold. They go in a washing net along with a white wash of knickers and towels. Paper tissues are for everyday use, they make my nose very sore and eventually scabby if used for a cold. Paper is wood. Cotton hankies are (for me) the most comfortable option, toilet tissue and kitchen roll are fact, the most horrible option. One man's meat etc!5

On my street we have a WhatsApp group and often people post details of unwanted items. Might be worth checking.
Also groups such as "free to collect" (try fb for those) could help. On some you can post "wants"Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)5 -
Todays money saving, not much but it all helps, cereal inner bag and bread bag kept for reuse. Some cd's sent to ziffit, yellow sticker shopping - (strawberrys, lettuce, avocados, pepper, yogurts, malt loaf, chicken breasts)4
