  • which bank is it?

option one seems best way forward. A huge well done for being a real man and being kind to your wife in this situation, I bet she feels lousy over this.

    Hi there

Has your wife had any letters before? If not then you could cite ignorance about the overdraft, an oversight if you like. It would not bide well for the bank if they've allowed the overdraft to just sit there unchallenged whilst accruing charges, especially since charges are big news at the moment.

Apparently yes, though she's sat on them & ignored them because she did a similar thing before (First Direct) and it ended up with a £300 settlement (including the actual money owed). She didn't want me to know that she's "still useless with money" (her quote not mine).

She's not used the account for over a year, yet they've been happily slapping charges on without so much as raising the overdraft limit and inviting her in for a "chat" to sort out her finances. Grrr - angry now  - at the bank not her (though she's been a right dingbat for letting it brew like this!).

Any responsible bank would have seen there was no money going into the account and been onto the person like a shot. Or am I still living in the 1970s when banks were a little more human?

Personally I'd try for option 1 with the understanding that the bank closes the account down.

Does she have any other accounts with this bank (even in joint names) - if so, empty them before the bank does.

We're definitely closing her account whatever happens. Fortunately we've no other accounts with that bank so they can't try and siphon funds from them (if that's legal anyway). Phew :p

    Cheers,
    Matt

Fortunately child ben is paid into an old "redundant" account that we use as a temp holding account. Good job really given the fact that the details of it are out in the public domain somewhere thanks to HMG

Will let you know the outcome of tomorrow's meeting.
  • Plenty of good advice given to you mate, but just a really well done on being a proper man with your wife. The banks are flaming awful, lets hope they lose this bank charge case....

One that has 4 letters in it and would score 11 in Scrabble (if initials were allowed) :D

Thanks. She does - and so do I.

  • Well I think you should give option three a whirl. What do you have to lose? You might have to backtrack and lose face. So what!! If it saves you any money do what you have to. Is your wife heavily pregnant? Obviously she has to go to this meeting because it's her account so tell her to sob and sob and sob. Speaking as a fellow female I'd do whatever it took to make them look small and be as uncomfortable as possible (and you might just keep some of your money). Normally I think we should pay what we owe but in such a case this is blatant stealing. Robin Hood's little brother they are.... (Robin B*$tard)

    Hi there

Your a good un for not shouting, just like my hubby last November. Anyway, got the ball rolling with the bank charges. I did this time last year and only lost out on £154.00. Came out with £1574.00 from a couple of years bank charges.

    All the best.:A
:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling
