Received Letter Tax owed 2017

Hi,

I have just received a letter from HMRC. Stating that I owe tax from 2017

So the meat and bones is

"We've written to you before about your overdue self assessment tax,
You still haven't paid what you owe"

I have not had a letter in the past 7 years to tell me I owe tax. I remember submitting this late. My business was failing I wasn't in the best place. 2016 I was working PAYE for an agency. I've been in permanent employment since 2017.

Anyway I have a statement of liabilities
Period ending 05 04  2017

SA Balancing Charge
Tax                                  75.80
Interest to 06 05 2024     18.85

SA Late filing Penalty      99.01
Tax                                  24.23

SA Daily Penalty             900
tax                                   207.89

SA 6 Month Late Filing Penalty
Tax                                  300
Interest                            62.95

Now I do remember filing late. However this to me reads as I never filed. I know I'd incured a penalty.

This was at the time of a new relationship that broke down. I never received any mail off my ex. I've lived in two properties since. one just over two years and this one for three years.

I have not seen a letter from HMRC in all this time. However I've been accruing an ongoing debt. I'm not in the position to pay over £1600 so what can I do? I don't know where to start. I struggle by from month to month as it is. I've spent the past two winters only using central heating when my son stays to keep my bills down.

So you did not inform HMRC of your new address at the time?

And it doesn't read as not filed otherwise there would be no balancing payment. Filing doesn't make the penalties go away.

Onus is on you to inform them of any change in address. Harsh reality I'm afraid to say.

Have a look at your online tax account to check all the details.

Then request a payment plan. Or an adjustment to your tax code

you admit you were late submitting so you have indeed got a late penalty. The penalty is fixed amounts for being fixed number of days late - the exact details are an easy google search.
