Terrifying Lightbulb Moment!

DLA is a funny thing... very odd way they work out how you are entitled to money! I had a long term illness which was removed through surgery recently; but I never qualified for DLA, even though for several months I couldn't work.
Definatly contact some Asperger's organisations, they could be of some real help in helping him get work, or get more DLA. They seem to have the experience in knowing how to fill in the forms in the 'right' way.

Hi Scorpio
Was just taking time to read through some of the previous posts on this thread.
Did you contact CCCS to see if they can set you up a debt management plan or give you more advice re: debts?? Also did you contact an Aspergers charity about your son's DLA (charities often know the best ways of getting the most out of benefits forms) - sorry if you have already done this
What sort of work do you do?? Do you have the skills to do office temping? Night work in banks that need to have people available overnight can often pay really well (not sure if you can leave your son overnight) although Ia m not sure where they recruit through.
Have you checked out the 'up your income' forum. I am guessing you have as you are doing Quidco and Clicks but I thoght I would just check,£34,547 (Dec 07); Current debt: £zilch (Debt free December 2010)

Aww heck-it never rains but it pours eh ? Have a hug.
Can I very tactfully ask the reason-with the cheque bouncing-if the company went under then you will be able to claim any due money from the govt including some notice-if it isn't that then apologies.but the hug still stands !
January is probably THE best time to be looking for a new job as traditionally it's the time a lot of people quit-so hopefully a bigger paypacket and an employer who doesn't bounce cheques is in the offing.
I know AS covers a wide range but is there the possib ility of talking to your son about the changes going on (Yes-I *do* understand how hard that *change* word is for AS people-I have a sixteen year old with AS) and the possibility of him looking for work. A visit to the job centre for him too might bring forth a place on a getting into work course-that would give him new life skills and hopefully an allowance at least whilst training and JSA for a period afterwards even if it didn't lead to a job in the end-and who knows he may find something he enjoys. In the meantime when you go and claim make sure that you ask for a full benefits check to ensure you are claiming for everything you should be for both of you
What kind of work do you do ? From the way you write I don't think you'll have any problems finding a new job you sound very good with words and that's an asset in most jobs.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Scorpio - I'm off to bed now.
Things are thinning out on here as it is getting late. It is probably worth logging on tomorrow in the early evening and reposting on this thread to bump it back up, then you will get up to 200 people checking it out instead of just a few of us.

rog2 you are a star! Will be contacting CCCs tomorrow. No, employer did not sort all wages but enough to pay mortgage. My son is fine, thank you, not entitled to any more help and I feel more fine than I should be maybe? Trying to be positive and telling myself I'm not worthless! Thanks for all the help on here xLightbulb moment 28th December 2007

Course you aren 't worthless-you lost a job-and you'll find another. No-one is (or should be) judged by what they do for a living-as the saying goes "No-one ever said on their deathbed "I wish I'd spent more time on the office" !!
It's a blip an annoying one so close to your lightbulb moment but just a blip or maybe even a silver lining if it means you end up with a nicer and more rewarding job. If your previous job had financial problems be especially careful to keep old payslips for a few years that show you did pay NI contributions if there is any possibility that the company never actually paid them over as you'd need to prove you did have them deducted from your pay if gaps show up later on.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Hi scorpio - I'm sorry I'm not about much, at the moment, due to work - got called in last night as someone off sick, and am back in at 4pm today.
I do think another chat with CCCS is important, but I think that you are experiencing other problems, as well, and maybe CAB would also be worth talling to, as their 'remit' covers much more than 'financial advice' (at which, by the way, they are very good).
And NOBODY is worthless - we ALL get down when things like this happens.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.

Just to clarify what a few people seem to be confused about - DLA has nothing to do with working or not. It's based on the level of care / mobility needs of the person.
Scorpio - if your son can't work he should be on IS or IB to cover the lack of wages. DLA is about his care needs. Please PM me or ask on the benefits board for more info. I'm sure he's entitled to more than just the low rate.No longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -

Thanks again for all the help. Have made son an appointment for a back to work course at the local college and will be ringing job centre on Monday as I understand that they have a dedicated worker for people with disabilities. And aim to try and stop being so soft with him too
I need to think really seriously about help with debt arrangements as I work in financial services and the FSA don't take kindly to that when you're applying for jobs. But I've just thought (dumb person here) that I could ask the question from CCCS instead of just assuming.Lightbulb moment 28th December 2007
