Help with negotiating short settlement pls

  • Spent many months dealing with MBNA for £19k debt, did a short settlement with them for 60% and paid them £11.4k. Got all the official letters etc stating how they will record it on my credit file, etc and how it would be there for 6 years, etc.

I use checkmyfile for multi-agency monitoring of my credit file. It seems to take about 6 weeks to update overall. I logged in last week and SURPRISE of ALL SURPRISES, Experian show balance of ZERO and "The account has been satisfactorily closed". Call credit shows :

    PS
Partial settlement. The payment status has been reported as up to date.
    Limit
    £0
    Balance
    £0
    Change
    -£19,394

...... I have to say that I am totally AMAZED that this is how it worked out. I did not expect this. I asked them how it would be recorded (the Irish mob are quite friendly, The indian team are a nightmare)... and they specifically said it would be recorded as "part satisfied" and the remaining balance of 7k would be shown for 6 years.

I never defaulted, was 2 months late.

The irony is that I had been so worried about the possibility of the negative mark on my credit history that I have been ringing them offering to pay the extra 7k to clear it. They seemed a bit bemused that I wanted to do that. To date, they have not replied on that.

Equifax have yet to update and call credit are not used widely.

Frankly, this is the outcome I wanted all along!!! I can say, from experience with these nasty MBNA people, that fighting battles along the lines of "I will pay you 60% and i want full and final settlement recorded on my file" ... is a complete waste of time. They will not agree to it.

I'll post up images from my file shortly

    I am amazed.......................:money:
  • Sorry GeorglJungle but I disagree here. I have a written F&F settlement at 70% with MBNA on my debt after being on a DMP for a year. My credit account shows partial settlement and the status says Satisfied.

I have in writing their accptance of my F&F offer which includes that they won't sell the outstanding balance to a 3rd party and neither will they or a appointed 3rd party chase me for the remainder. They also sent me a final statement where my 70% payment was shown and the 30% remainder was shown as payment too and the credit account balance is £0
