I just looked at the railcard website to check the current prices and saw that young persons, senior citizens and family railcards all increase in price from £20 to £24 on Jan 1st so if you are thinking of getting one, get organised and buy it now!!
Of course all the rail fares will be going up then as well - double whammy!

How much do you save with a family railcard? We are only expecting to make one return journey so is it worth it?0
-
it totally depends on the cost of this single journey.
Do the maths, the cost of the:
Journey with discount (remember to include cost of the card itself)
The journey without card.
If its a short journey then probably not but long ones generally you will make a saving within one journey.0 -
I recently did a trip from manchester to weymouth, and the price came down from £160 to £90 for a return ticket.
Railcard cost £20 so it paid foritself in one trip! If you go to nationalrail.co.uk and find your route, then get ticket prices you can say whay raildcard you have to see the saving for yourself0 -
Thanks off to check it out.0

Railcards are useful, but by far the greatest savings can be done by planning ahead and grabbing the cheap fares, and also exploiting the anomalies in the pricing system. There's an article on this site about that very thing, which has been mentioned in the weekly email.Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0
