But I still don't understand how you knew a) the loan took place or b) it has already been repaid?

Surely if you have the proof that a) took place and b) never occured then you have all the proof you need to take legal action.

My grandfather told my father about the loan before he died and the person he loaned the money to has never denied that he was loaned the money, there just isn't anything in writing. The loan had definitely not been repaid at the time of my grandfather's death.
Fiscal drag, that's my problem. Too many people dragging on my fiscals.

So a Gentleman's Agreement to someone who turned out not to be?
Can't see that you can do anything without proof, but good luck anyway.

How was the loan lent ?

If it was by cheque or bank draft etc - there must be a paper trail - can't you check the transaction with your Grandfathers bank ?

And the person he loaned it to must have paid it in to an account.

    My advice:

Tell as many of the people who know the bloke that he has £9000 of your late grandfather's money.

Preferably tell them in front of the bloke.

Tell all his mates in the pub.

    Embarrass and shame the bloke.

But wear a Halloween mask so no-one knows it's you...! :rotfl: Ta-da - no slander claim! (Just have a fast car waiting outside with the engine running!)
