Coming up 2 years, around £24k outstanding currently. Now we have received a lump sum we would like to rebuild our credit rating to enable us to get a mortgage eventually.

Hi, can you clarify when the defaults were recorded on your credit records? These debts will "drop off" your credit record 6 years after that date, even if you never paid a penny towards them. Only other legal action like CCJs would change that date.
