Hopefully someone may have come across this before.
A friend of mine needs to register for self assessment and has tried to do so a total of three times now, but each time after a varying period of time they receive an email saying
We are unable to process your application because the address provided does not match our records.
WHAT TO DO NOW
You will need to check or update your address before resubmitting the form.
You can check and update your address online using your Personal Tax Account.
But the address on the Personal Tax Account is exactly the same as they put on the regsiter form, I've been over to see them and went through it line by line with them and it is what they entered. They also recently received a tax code notice and the address on that is exactly as is on the Personal Tax Account.
Note that after the first two failed attempts they contacted the hmrc via the online chat and they suggested a different web page to start the register process but this too has failed in exactly the same way.
I'm hopeful that someone may have a suggestion they can try other than to contact the hmrc again, so any ideas?

  • I would suggest to use previous address if address has changed in last three years and once application is submitted , use chat to update the address. Sometimes HMRC systems act funny.

Please do not follow this advice and use an old address as HMRC may write to it as part of the registration process disclosing the UTR.  This individual has been posting incorrect advice and information on another thread throughout the day.

It sounds like they need to contact HMRC technical support - see gov.uk pages for links although I would use the old fashioned way and phone them but be prepared for a long, long wait on hold.

Alternatively they could use another old fashioned way and complete form SA1, then print and post it.
