SMI ..Council Tax !

There's no forums on this so it appears it's one of the Local Councils hidden items. As I've just found out after 20 years. SMI: severe mental impairment you can claim
Council Tax full rebate.
If you have Severe mental impairment ie: paranoid pyschophrenia, and similar you just have to contact Council tax SMI dept and they will post you or you can download the form from Council website and take to GPS who will complete it. Or you can ring gp direct and ask them to complete SMI form.I rang gp and asked 4 days later gp rang to say my form I'd ready to collect. As I've always paid whole amount I'm not aware if I can have it backdated from 2005 or just your standard 3 - 6 months worth a go ! good luck

Its not widely known but charities are trying to advertise it, there are plenty of posts from people claiming it and back dating it on the benefits board.

Many councils no longer keep records of CT payments for more than 6 years, so there is a possibility any refund would be limited to the past 6 years.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • My husband served for over 20 years in the Army and was medically discharged with complex PTSD, which due to the severity of the condition has been informed by his last Psychiatrist that he is untreatable due to the numerous traumatic he was involved in.

We have previously made contact with you some time ago regarding classifying him as council tax exemption as he has a SMI.

Unfortunately our GP has never been involved with his mental health and will not sign the SMI certificate and yet the MOD describe him as potentially violent together with other severe issues, such as suicidal ideations, self isolation, requires constant supervision.

Together with a whole host of other mental health disabilities which are both alarming and deeply concerning.

He receives a war pension for his conditions, together with mod attendance allowance.  In addition he receives PIP for both care and mobility due to his conditions.

We do have copies of his last psychiatric assessment, together with various paperwork confirming his poor mental health and the diagnosis .

It is evident that our GP is not a specialist in mental health and does not treat him for this, apart from signing off his prescription medication for his mental health and other medical conditions.

Can you advise what we should do in obtaining the SMI criteria ?

Do we simply fill the form in without the GP signature and then appeal if the decision is a negative?

    Best Regards

Have you asked the GP and they have refused?
