Website says "Full Year" but I know I didn't work 52 weeks

Options
I do not understand the "full year" calcs, and am worried that though the HMRC website says "full year" now, when I go to retire they'll do a thorough recalc and I'll come up short.

I was fortunate to have good jobs paying above the NI Upper Earnings Limit. I tended to hop about though, and may years there will be 2 months employment gap between jobs. I never claimed unemployment benefit as I felt I wasnt "looking for work" as I had my next job lined up.

So - I did earn well each year, but my understanding of the rules was that if I miss weeks (or months!) this is not a full year. Have I just misunderstood the rules and should trust the HMRC website??

A "full year" is a measure of amount earned rather than time and is 52 x the lower earning limit (£6396 for 23/4 according to google) I got confused when I worked 8 weeks of a tax year but earned enough for a "full year"

If you earn above the LEL in a week, currently £152, all amounts up to the UEL are added together and reaching 52 x the LEL will give you a full year.

  • Thank you both, very clear, that's a load off my mind.
